“Ambitious and responsible Emiratis will successfully carve out their future, actively engaging in an evolving socio-economic environment, and drawing on their strong families and communities, moderate Islamic values, and deep-rooted heritage to build a vibrant and well-knit society.”
UAE Vision 2021
|
| The aim of the conference is to bring together academics and practitioners to address issues that pertain to the challenges that Arab youth face as they try to reconcile the old and the new in the context of industrialization, modernization, globalization, and democratization The world in which they live has become more complex, ambiguous, individuated, and in some ways foreign. The values and traditions that brought comfort, security, and continuity to their parents and grandparents are being challenged by the media, exposure to the ‘other’, and the greater freedom granted to them by education, globalization, and the internet. These transformative social, economic, and cultural forces place them at the crossroads of mental and emotional well-being. Already, there are signs that failure to deal with these challenges is resulting in a variety of mental health problems: personality disorders, domestic violence, a high divorce rate, and substance abuse. This conference provides a forum for scholars, researchers, practitioners, policy-makers, and grassroots activists to engage in a meaningful dialogue about transformative issues that face Arab youth. |
